The first round of 2024/25's edition of Regional 2 Thames begins on the 7th September, with Marlow travelling to Perivale to take on OPs.
We profile Saturday's opponents in the article below.
History
Marlow RFC officially came into being in 1947, though they had played a game as early as 1913, beating High Wycombe RFC by 13-0 at Crown Meadow. They then played their first game in their modern incarnation against Old Wycombensians with the final score exactly the same as that 34 years earlier. However, their first official game was against London Airport. Their first ground was Home Meadow ; Marlow then moved around a bit, holding fixtures at the likes of Sir William Borlase's Grammar School, Fieldhouse Lane and Pound Lane. After some time at Gossmore Lane, the club moved their facilities to Riverwoods Drive in 1962, where they remain to this day.
Marlow have also produced some notable internationals, including former England and British Lions scrum half Matt Dawson, along with Paul Burnell (who played for Scotland and toured with the Lions in 1993), and Nick Kennedy, who played 7 times for England in the 2000s. They have also had players represent Croatia (Jaska Lovreta and Michael Lunjevich), Czechia (Ladia Vondrasek) and Scotland Under 18s (Charlie Moss).
There are two regular senior men's sides, a men's veterans outfit and a women's XV, plus a full boy's youth section and a women's Under 18 side. The current head coach is Rod Duguid, who took up the position in the summer following the deparature of Rory Greenslade-Jones.
Records
Using data from the England Rugby website - going back as far as September 1998 - Marlow's record win was against Stow-on-the-Wold in October 2016 in Southern Counties North, running out 98-0 victors. You can read a match report here :
This is also Marlow's record margin of victory. The biggest loss was actually in their most recent competitive fixture - which happened to be against Old Priorians. They fell to a 96-21 defeat in April of this year to round out the Regional 2 Thames season. The 117 points in this game is also the highest scoring game Marlow have participated in.
OPRFC and Marlow have played each other twice previously, both during the course of the 2023/24 season, with OPs winning both fixtures.
