Twisters tame Teddington

OPRFC put two straight defeats behind them with a bonus point win against Teddington, completing a successful double header for the club at St Benedict's Playing Field.

A pre-match rain shower dissipated before kick off and it didn't take long for the Twisters to open their account, playing a couple of phases before spinning it out wide to winger James Paxman to score in the first minute of the game, going unconverted for the earliest of 5-0 leads.

Some more promising movement forward for OPs was halted by a number of knock ons, which Teddington eventually fed off for a try under the posts, aided by some poor Priorians tackling. Looking to wrest back some control, the Twisters did well to hold off continued challenge from the Antlers, working their way out of the 22 and advancing back down the pitch into kicking range following a penalty, Will Taylor able to slot three points with a quarter played to make it 8-7.

Having entered a purple patch, it was no surprise to see another successfully executed rolling maul soon after, as Mishka Fibbens moved joint top in the try scoring charts with his grounding. The play then became a bit messy - understandable given the previous downpour - as chances dried up for both teams towards the end of the half, Teddington and OPs putting a penalty apiece over to bring it to 18-10 as the whistle blew to end the first 40 minutes.

A frantic start to the second half saw nineteen points scored in the opening eight minutes ; substitute Luis Gomez-Rose - making his first appearance since March - was on the board twice for OPs, Teddington sandwiching a try between his brace as the Twisters were able to earn a try bonus point with plenty of time left to play, 30-17 with half an hour to go.

Teddington soon got another try of their own to add sow some seeds of doubt into Priorian minds, yet those fears were finally assuaged following Tomek Tsang's brilliant interception with 15 minutes to go, reading the pass perfectly to race in under the sticks. Taylor converted to make it 37-24, which is how it remained with the final stages played out with a somewhat placid nature.

This was a good win for OPs against a tricky opponent, the return of Gomez-Rose adding some fuel to the physical fire as well as general mental motivation ; Michael Jobling was awarded Direct Site Supplies Player of the Match having moved from full back to scrum half and doing a superb job straddling the line between forwards and backs.

Priorians remain seventh in the table, though only five points separate them and third placed London Scottish Lions. Another home game awaits next week against Belsize Park.
